Dr Max de Henseler, HB9RS - passionate Radio Amateur
and distinctive personality of the Radio Amateur World
|
|
Max, HB9RS - our illustrious Club Member - is the
founder of the magnificent historical Hallicrafters-Collection which our
club exhibits in the "Clin d'Ailes" Swiss Air Force Museum in Payerne.
Through the decades he has not only collected these rarities, but also
marked in his way, especially with publications of some particularly
noteworthy historical works, the world of amateur radio. Therefore,
Dr Max de Henseler HB9RS deserves a place of honor in our website.
Here are some important stages in his career as a
radio amateur and author of historical works: |
|
1947 |
14 years old, young Max gets his first call sign as a short wave listener.
This marks the beginning of his activity as a passionate and devoted
radio amateur. Max, HE9RHP runs his hobby alongside his studies to
obtain the Swiss Federal Matura. |
 |
|
1955 |
With 22
Years, Max passes the amateur radio examination. Thus, he gets the
license and his call sign HB9RS. |
 |
|
1956 |
Only a
year after his license Max becomes a member of the Central Board of the
USKA (the “Swiss ARRL”) as a Traffic Manager. |
|
|
1957
 |
HB9RS -
still USKA Traffic Manager - is the first Swiss Radio Amateur awarded
with the “Diplôme d'excellence de l'Union Française des Radio Amateurs”
in SBB/Phone. |
 |
|
|
Max
monitors the signals of SPUTNIK, the first artificial satellite; this
activity is even shown in the weekly film news (“Actualités
cinématographiques no 794 du 15.11.1957”). |
|
|

In the
meantime, Max completed his studies in physics at the University of

Max,
HB9RS/W2 constitutes in New York the "United Nations Amateur Radio Club"
and set up the famous amateur radio station with the call sign 4U1UN.
This station becomes even a DXCC country. During all his years as a
club-chairman (until 1989), Max has given the opportunity to many radio
amateurs in the world to be QRV from this station. |

1979 |
Since
Max, HB9RS/W2, has now “Worked All Continents from All Continents”, he
gets - as the very first radio amateur ever - the WAC/WAC-Award on
October 26. One must do it… |
 |
|
1991 |
HB9RS/W2 publishes his historic work on the Hallicrafters radios
under the title “Hallicrafters Story - When the Sky was the limit”
Max de Henseler knew the brilliant manufacturer Bill Halligan, W9WZE
(WA9AC-W4AK) personally. The author has written this book from the
perspective of a Radio Amateur and a collector. It shows not only the
radio equipment like short-wave receivers, transmitters and transceivers
Hallicrafters has built during the period from 1933 to 1975. The
development of the Hallicrafters-Company and the career of the brilliant
founder "Bill”, W9WZE (WA9AC-W4AK) is also pointed out. Many units of
the Company have been used and are well known by radio amateurs. Some of
them were special favorites of shortwave listeners. |

|
1995
 |
De
Henseler investigated about Marconi’s short stay in Salvan (VS),
Switzerland and the radio experiments he made there. On the occasion of
the international conference “100 Years of Radio” in London he hands
over his
research paper on Marconi’s early experiments in Switzerland to the
Princess Elettra Marconi Giovanelli (the daughter of the genius
inventor) and her son Guglielmo Giovanelli. |
 |
|
2001 |
During
spring, the Radio Club of America publishes the book on Marconis early
experiments in Salvan (Switzerland), authored by HB9RS (M.C. de Henseler
"On Marconis Trail in Switzerland" - The Radio Club of America, Inc.,
2001) |

historical works of national and international significance, published
in specialized magazines. |
|
|
Also
interesting are his stamp collections, which are in direct connection
with telecommunications and Amateur Radio. Here's a selection on the
Internet:

|
Max is
a member for life respectively a honorary member of many amateur radio
associations throughout the world (he even has founded some of them). He
still is “addicted” to his passion. |
