World Space Week celebrates the contribution of space science and
technology to the betterment of the human condition. Endorsed by the
United Nations General Assembly in December 1999, it marks the
anniversary of two milestones in the human exploration and use of outer
space:
-
October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made
Earth satellite,
Sputnik,
thus opening the way for space exploration, and
-
October 10, 1967: The signing of the
Outer Space
Treaty governing the Activities of States in the
Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, Including the Moon and
Other Celestial Bodies.

The United Nations-declared World Space Week takes place every
year from 4-10 October. In 2007, the central topic was the
50th anniversary of the Space Age.
The following pages will give you an overview of our "World Space Week"
